Work In Progress

Forgive the messy and non-cohesive state of the blog right now. After a nine month leave of absence I decided some housekeeping was necessary and I decided to take on the task myself rather than hirer a designer. It's a slow process, but it'll get done eventually and will look ah-mah-zing.

Stonewall and (Army)Wife Plus One

I'd like you to meet our son, Samuel Patrick, born Saturday, December 27, at 7:50PM, 8 lbs. 10 oz., 20 inches long.

We're home!! So I know I said I was going to send text posts to the blog, but according to my phone the texts weren't going through, so I stopped trying to send them. However, one got through, so everyone knows that things did start out as planned.

We got to the hospital around 8:30 on 12/27 and got checked in and were put into a labor and delivery room. The nurses began prepping me for the induction and told me that they would start me on certain drugs and that this could take up to a couple of days. I was just like, "Oh, OK" because I was hoping for something a bit quicker. Well, it turns out my doc wanted things to go much quicker as well because he came strolling in and said, "Let's get started by breaking your water." The nurses were looked at each other and said, "OK. Forget everything we just said." Earlier the one nurse made the comment that an induction was like a trip from Florida to Maine and I was in Cuba. Now she said, "Looks like you just hopped onto the Concord."

The doc check my cervix and I was dilated to about 1.5 centimeters and he broke my water. It didn't take long before I started having contractions and within about an hour or so they were anywhere from five to ten minutes apart and about a minute long. At this point they weren't very strong so I was feeling optimistic. Stonewall and I did a few laps around the halls until the contractions started getting too strong.

By 15:00, the contractions were getting pretty painful and I was starting to realize I was pretty silly to think I could get through this without serious pain meds. At this point, the doc checked my cervix again and I was at about 2.5-3 centimeters and the Sammy's head was starting to mold, meaning it was starting to look like he might be too big for a vaginal delivery. The doc said he would give it about another hour or so to see if I would make more progress and to determine if in fact Sammy was too big.

It was at this point that I decided to start living in reality and admit that I hate pain and I WANTED an epidural. I was still a bit nervous about getting one, but I spoke with the anesthesiologist and he assured me that I had nothing to worry about because the epidural had a completely different effect than what had happened during my previous surgery and my concerns were unnecessary. So I signed on the dotted line. Within 5 minutes, life was wonderful again. It was a bit weird not being able to move my legs on my own, but when it came to the contractions I couldn't feel a thing.

When the doc came to check me again I was much more pleasant and hoping to hear good news. Unfortunately, good news wasn't forthcoming. I had made no progress and Sammy's head was still molding definitely indicating that there was no way he was fitting through my pelvis. C-section it was.

After a couple more hours of waiting due to an emergency c-section that was taking place, I was wheeled into the operating room and strapped down. Since I already had the epidural, they were able to use that rather than put me to sleep for the surgery. Stonewall was able to stand in the room with me while they performed the c-section. I wanted nothing to do with actually seeing the surgery, but the light above me acted as a mirror, so I saw some of my insides...ick.

Anyway, Stonewall was talking to me and rubbing my head, trying to keep me from looking up and seeing what I really did not want to see when I heard the tiniest little whimper followed by the best cry in the whole world and, "Congratulations! It's a boy!" They called Stonewall over to meet his son and cut the umbilical cord. At this point, they thought Sammy was over 9 pounds, but when Stonewall brought him over to show me, I thought he looked like the tiniest little things I'd ever seen. He was so beautiful with dark blue eyes, a tiny button nose, dirty blonde hair, and smaller version of Stonewall's mouth. He wasn't crying anymore and he just kept staring back and forth between Stonewall and me and puckering his little lips and scrunching up his tiny nose. I was smiling like crazy because he was so perfect and I already loved him so much, my Samuel.

While they finished putting me back together and cleaning me up, Stonewall accompanied Sammy to the nursery. On the way there our families got gather around the bassinet and take photos. Of course, most of them cried.

After they wheeled me into recovery, I was told how big Sammy was and I got to see his footprints. Our families came back to see me and congratulate me. They were all so happy. Unfortunately, visiting hours were over for the evening so, they weren't able to stay. Even though I wanted all of them to be able to hold Sammy, I was kind of glad because I hadn't even had the chance to hold Sammy and really look at him and so I was very grateful for the time that Stonewall and I had alone with him that first time we really got to meet Sammy.

Once I was given some pain meds and wheeled into my maternity room they finally brought Sammy into us and I got to hold him for the first time. I can't even describe what that was like. I was beyond excited and happy, a little nervous and scared, completely and utterly in love and there will never be another moment in my life that compares to that moment.

So, after a few fun nights in the hospital, we are home. Sammy was down to 8lbs 2 oz. when we left the hospital. Him and I are still working on breastfeeding, but we're coming along just fine and my milk is finally coming in, so it shouldn't be long before he flies past his birth weight. Except for the fact that Stonewall's leave ends on Friday, everything is perfect right now. I have my husband and son at home with me and everyone is happy and healthy. Stonewall and I are going to spend the next few days admiring our son and enjoying parenthood, 2AM feedings and all. I hope everyone has a great New Year's and I will be back again in 2009.

Tomorrow...Finally!!

They are inducing me tomorrow morning!! I'm excited, nervous, scared and about as ready as anyone who has never given birth can be. Stonewall and I packed our bags last week, so they are ready to go. Both of our families are very excited for tomorrow as well. It certainly puts a different spin on things when we know that by tomorrow we're having a baby. I figured out how to post using my cell phone, so I'll try and post updates as things progress tomorrow and hopefully, by tomorrow night I'll be posting a photo of our baby boy!

Wish us luck and a speedy labor and delivery!!

...Two Turtle Doves and a Very Pregnant Lady!

So here we are...December 23...two days before Christmas...and apparently I've turned into an elephant and will have a 2 year gestational period. Our due date came and went. The doc said there was a 95% chance I would deliver between Dec. 13 and Dec. 23. Only a few more hours left, so we'll see.

I've tried all the old wives' tales that supposedly get labor going. Let me tell ya...they don't work! I've tried spicy food, walking (well, walked...waddled...potato...pahtahto), raspberry tea, sex, and an enema. Stupid wives. What do they know?

We had a doctor's appointment this morning. I had a very uncomfortable pelvic exam and my cervix is about as thin as it can get. They did a fetal non-stress test and everything with the baby is completely normal. I go back again on Friday for all the same tests and at that point, if I haven't gone into labor they will scheduled me to be induced on Monday.

On the up side, I've been able to get all my Christmas shopping done. All the gifts are wrapped and ready to go! On the downside, I have gifts for my baby under the tree, "2008 Baby's 1st Christmas" ornaments on the tree and a husband that leaves again on January 2. *Sigh*

Sorry for the Debbie Downer moment.

Anyway...

I hope everyone has a great holiday! Merry Christmas!!

Not Yet

So no baby yet. However, Stonewall's leave started a little earlier than we expected, so I won't be posting for a bit. Once I have the baby though, I will be sure to update and let everyone know the good news. Let's just hope it's sooner rather than later because Stonewall won't be home for very long :(

I Think The End Is Near

For the first time I couldn't put my socks on by myself and Meg had to help me.

I'm hurting today. I feel like I spent all night doing sit-ups except the sore muscle feeling is in my uterus and not my abs. I told my mom and she gave me a knowing look. The thing is it's a continuous pain, not one that comes and goes on regular intervals. Is it possible to just have one very long contraction instead of many? Will that get him out faster?

The Nursery

The nursery is pretty much finished! The only thing left to do is hang the mobile up over the crib. My mom is also going to paint a poem over the crib, but I'm actually rethinking that. I'm afraid it might be too much because there's already a lot going on in the room. Anyway, here are some photos:

This is the mural my mom and sister drew and painted! I absolutely love it!

This lamp was the inspiration for the mural.

The mobile will hang from the ceiling above the crib. This way as the baby gets older I can shorten the mobile rather than having to take it off the crib and put it away. My mom also made the mobile.

This had been a really ugly chair that we got from my Grandma, but a new blue recliner cover and now it's comfy and good looking. As you can see we already have lots of camo going on. Welcome to the Army, baby. We also have a few hand-me-downs as well. The white lamb sitting on the bottom shelf was mine when I was a baby and the blanket on the chair is made from Stonewall's blanket when he was a toddler.

Such cute tiny shoes! I'm in awe over how tiny all the baby clothes are.

My favorite Target find!

Still Pregnant

No change in that area. Blah. I am so ready to not be pregnant anymore. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy being pregnant in that I think it's one of the coolest things to be able to feel him move and to really think about what being pregnant means is just amazing and yes, I am enjoying my preggo body. However, I don't enjoy the constant need to urinate or the struggle to just get in and out of bed every hour every night to pee or the heartburn.

I'm ready for him to be here, to be born. I'm ready to be done worrying about labor and delivery. Once I go into labor it means Stonewall gets to come home for his 4-day pass and I'm ready to see him again after 3 months. I'm ready to have a full size bladder again. I'm ready to stop being in this blah mood because I'm so ready to be done being pregnant and to be a mom and there is nothing I can do to speed this up!

Ps. Also, I'm sorry for being such a bad blogger lately. I haven't been updating my blog much and I've been really bad about keeping up with my fave blogs and leaving comments.

FMLA for Military Families

Back in January, President Bush made some changed to the Family Medical Leave Act with regards to employees that have family members serving in the military. However, at the time, there were still some questions surrounding the changes because the language of the regulations was not clear.

On November 17, these changes were better defined and published in the Federal Register. According to The Personnel Advisor (a human resources publication) these changes include:

"Military Caregiver Leave: Implements the requirement to expand FMLA protections for family members caring for a covered service member with a serious injury or illness incurred in the line of duty on active duty. These family members are able to take up to 26 workweeks of leave in a 12-month period.

Leave for Qualifying Exigencies for Families of National Guard and Reserves: The law allows families of National Guard and Reserve personnel on active duty to take FMLA job-protected leave (“active duty leave”) to manage their affairs based on “qualifying exigencies.” The rule defines "qualifying exigencies" as: (1) short-notice deployment (2) military events and related activities (3) childcare and school activities (4) financial and legal arrangements (5) counseling (6) rest and recuperation (7) post-deployment activities and (8) additional activities where the employer and employee agree to the leave."

These changes, among others not specifically related to military families, will be effective January 16, 2009. If you have any questions as to whether or not you qualify for FMLA leave you should see your Human Resources/Personnel department.

Labor and Delivery Anxiety

So, I'm really starting to get nervous about this whole labor and delivery thing. I knew it was coming now for the past nine months, but now that it's literally right around the corner (or, for all know, it's staring me in the face as I type this and right after I click "Publish" I'll have my first contraction) I'm starting to freak out a little bit.

I finished my Childbirth classes. That's what started this nervousness. In the one class we watched a video of the entire labor and delivery. And I mean, Everything. I knew what labor and delivery entailed up until that point, but to actually see it? That's a whole other ballgame. Who knew that vaginas could get that big? Not me. I just couldn't even imagine until I saw the video. I really think that if they showed that video every year between 5th and 12th grades, the teen pregnancy rate would drop dramatically.

So, yeah. I'm getting pretty nervous. I'm not nervous about being a mom. I think I'm prepared for that. I mean, that's part of what led to the decision to stop having protected sexual intercourse. However, I never considered the part between this:

and this:

I'm getting major butterflies just thinking...no, wait a minute, is that..? Okay, nope, butterflies.

My Top 10 Favorite Christmas/Holiday Songs

It's that time of year again (my sister's favorite time of year, actually) when as soon as we turn on our radios we are bombarded with Christmas/Holiday music 24/7. (And I'm lying about my sister, she loathes radio stations this time of year.)

While I love the Christmas season, the music can get a bit much. After all, there are only so many holiday songs and there are only so many versions of each song that can be done. Yet, we hear them all, several times, between Black Friday and Christmas Day. I figure, between these two days, I could potentially listen to 1120 holiday songs and I probably would not hear much of a variety.

(How'd I get that number? Well, this year there are 28 days from Black Friday to Christmas Day, so that's 672 hours of air time for one radio station. On average, I'll say each song is 3 minutes long, so that's 224 songs played in that time. If half of my pre-programed stations (5 out of 10) play nothing by Holiday music, then that's 1120 songs.)

Okay, so moving on...Despite the fact that I do get a bit tired of hearing so much Christmas music, I'm not Scrooge and there are some tunes that I do love. So here's my list of my Top 10 Favorite Christmas/Holiday Songs.

Number 10: Baby, It's Cold Outside performed by Rod Stewart & Dolly Parton

Number 9: Santa Baby performed by Madonna

Number 8: Dominick The Donkey performed by Lou Monte

Number 7: Last Christmas performed by WHAM!

Number 6: I'll Be Home For Christmas performed by Elvis Presley

Number 5: Happy Christmas performed by David Cook

Number 4: Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) performed by U2

Number 3: All I Want For Christmas Is You performed by Mariah Carey

Number 2: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas performed by Judy Garland

Number 1: Do You Hear What I Hear? performed by Whitney Houston

Operation: Love ReUnited

I received an email not that long ago about a program called Operation: Love ReUnited. This program, which is for deploying, deployed, and returning military families, offers these families and their soldiers free photo sessions with a professional photographer in their area. As a gift of appreciation, each family will then receive a 4x6 photo album filled with the photos taken during their session. The album is automatically mailed to the soldier who is deployed at no cost to the family.

I am super excited about this program and have already contacted a photographer in our area that participates, so we can have pictures taken while Stonewall is home on Christmas leave. Already she had been contacted by other military families in the area who are deploying with Stonewall's battalion.

If you are a military family already in the middle of a deployment or you know one is coming up fast, go to the website Oplove.org to get more information about Operation: Love ReUnited and to find a photographer in your area.

Happy guessing!

Holiday Weekend Update

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving! I got to have three Thanksgiving dinners, so no complaints from me. I had Thanksgiving lunch with Stonewall's family, then dinner with my family and then last night my mom made a second dinner so we would have more leftovers. Leftover turkey sandwiches dipped in sweet potatoe syrup...yummy!

In other exciting news...my sister found her wedding dress! Sorry, I won't post a picture of it because that would ruin the suprise. Everyone will just have to wait until I post wedding photos next year. By the way, have I mentioned the weddind date? December 31, 2009. It's definitely going to be the best New Year's Eve party I've ever been too. I'd say the best wedding also, but in my world my wedding will always be the best, so Meg's wedding will be the second best :)

Meg and Dru also found their venue: The Inn at Leola Village. This place is gorgeous! Plus, they seem really easy-going about what you can and can't do at their venue. For instance, most places we've visited have said they would want us out of their venue by 12:30-1:00. Um, hello? New Year's Eve!! But this place was totally cool about letting us continue partying until 2:00AM. Also, they allow confetti cannons (!!!) and all the other fun New Year's Eve stuff you should have at the party of the year. Meg and Dru are really excited!

Meg moved in with me last night. Everyone can stop worrying now because I'm no longer the extremely pregnant woman living by herself in a house full of stairs and other dangerous contraptions.

A conversation I had with my mom a few days ago regarding my living alone:
Mom: What happens if you go into labor while you're there by yourself?
Me: They have these things now called telephones. It's not like I would have to send out a rider to let you know.

Oh, moms.

Even More A(muse)ment
